Since its inception nearly ten years ago, The Great North Art Show has
grown to become the North of England's leading showcase for the work of
professional contemporary artists. Each year the exhibition has expanded and 2007 saw the introduction of the Art Trail with independent galleries, shops, cafés and businesses in the city joining forces with the Great North Art Show by offering their premises as venues for satellite exhibitions through and around the centre of Ripon. | ||
This uniting of the city with the Cathedral and contemporary artists has
raised not only the profile of Ripon as a city of independent business with
a strong eye to the future, but also reinforces its identity as a centre
for the arts in Northern England. The size and compact nature of the city itself is perfect for this venture and the enthusiasm of the small business community's involvement is recognition of its success. |

Proceeds from the sale of works of art contribute to maintaining the choral
tradition of the Ripon Cathedral Choir – there are only two such choirs
left in the North of England – and we are proud of our achievements so far.
We cannot rest on our laurels and we believe passionately that we must build on our success and continue to be innovative, forward thinking and proactive if we are to maintain the high standards with which The Great North Art Show has become synonymous. |
